Why pixels, not characters
Google shows as much of a title as fits the width of the result, about 580 pixels on a desktop screen, and cuts the rest with an ellipsis. Letters take different amounts of room: a title full of capital Ws runs out of space long before one full of lower-case Is, even with the same number of characters. That's why character counts are only a rough guide. This tool measures the text in the same font Google uses, so the meter shows what will actually fit. Mobile results wrap onto more lines, so a title that fits on desktop usually fits on a phone too.
